Portal 2 features much more of the history of Aperture Science, and expands on everything that was interesting about the first game. Featuring the phenomenal vocal talents of Stephen Merchant as Wheatley and a much more fleshed out story, and absolutely lived up to the hype. Portal 2 came along in 2011, and offered a more substantial game released all on its own. Her darkly humourous robotic narration reveals very quickly that this situation isn’t even remotely okay, and you’ll soon discover why GLaDOS is considered one of gaming’s greatest villains. In the Aperture Science testing facility (a different research centre in the same universe as Half-Life’s Black Mesa) our silent protagonist Chell is led through some portal gun testing by GLaDOS. The story of Portal is what elevates the game from great to exceptional. More so than all these memorable chapters though, the final sequence and meeting with GLaDOS is one of the great moments in gaming history. Everyone who’s played the game before will remember the level featuring a load of military turrets, or the companion cube this collection was named after. It’s so satisfying solving problems with momentum, and makes what should be a slow paced thoughtful game feel more frenetic.įor such a short game, the original Portal is constantly throwing new ideas at you. This means if you jump from a high ledge into a portal, you’ll cannon out the other side and be able to reach all sorts of places. The best puzzles in Portal take advantage of the fact that any momentum you have going into a portal is applied when you exit out of the other side, or as the game so expertly explains it “speedy thing goes in, speedy thing goes out”. You’ll need to use these to put boxes on switches to open doors and find inventive ways around the facility. Your portal gun can fire two different coloured portals, and if you walk through one you’ll come out of the other. You’ll typically be presented with a test chamber to make your way through, and need to use your portal gun to solve the puzzles to do so. In case you’ve been living under the rock, Portal is a first person puzzle game that came as part of The Orange Box in 2007 featuring portals. Two of these GOAT contenders are the Portal games, which are now available on Switch in the form of the Portal: Companion Collection. Obviously we aren’t all going to agree when saying a single game is better than all others, but there are certainly some you could mention that would be better received when making such a bold claim. On a different side of things, I've always wanted to know what an action/ puzzle game would look with the portal gun. There aren’t many games that you can call one of the greatest of all time without raising a few eyebrows. This would allow for some pretty interesting dynamics since time could become a factor. With that in mind, I would like to see changes from simple things such as adding more intuitive and recurring mechanics, to soem extreme modifications like entirely new gameplay/ storytelling structuresĪnd also, I'd be down for some big changes like making Portal a game with big, open, varied levels, with multiple elements of puzzling and using the portals as the main gameplay feature. We all know what happens when you stop trying new things ( cough cod cough). Portal grew on the bases of innovation and I think it needs to continue innovating to remain as a great franchise. Honestly, I would like to see something totally different. Forgive me if I have retconnedĬool giveaway but most of the people commenting have never played any portal game so they cant really come up with very god ideas on what Portal 3 needs. Carolines murder of Chell was her eternal undoing.īut those are just my thoughts. The Chell from Portal 1 and 2 are not the same clone) Since Chell could not be imortalised in GLaDOS then the next person Cave wanted to test it with was Caroline. So Cave uploaded Chell Personality before her death but it was really "Chell" (as seen by the dull eyes and lack of speech abilitys in her clones. Also Cave has been working on a was to imortalise Chell in GLaDOS but due to her early death and the technology at the time it was impossible. Chell dies by the hand of Caroline due to Carolines undying love for Cave and jealousy of Chell. Also Caroline (GLaDOS) will also feature in the game and will be undershadowed by Chell. This is why GLaDOS is very hostile toward you in Portal 1 and 2, she is envious. I hope portal 3 takes place when Aperture is only new and you are taking orders from Cave Johnson and Chell.? Turns out the person you have been playing in Portal 1 and 2 is a clone of the late Cave Johnsons wife, Chell. Would Love the Portal bundle as I have neither Portal 1 or 2 but I have played 2 on xbox.
